As most people know celibacy is a requisite for catholic priests and marriage is prohibited yet there are some catholic priests who are exempt from these requirements. Firstly there are those belonging to the Eastern Catholic Church which is divided into to separate bodies "non -monastic" (those that can be married) and "monastic" (those that can't.) While the Eastern Catholic Church may appear more progressive with the exceptions of the Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara and the Ethiopian Catholic Churches who still impose clerical celibacy, they continue to require that all "non- monastic" clergy must be married before being ordained or otherwise will automatically be considered "monastic".
The other group of married priests is made up of ex-Anglicans and Lutherans who converted to Catholicism after 1980, when a exception to celibacy rule was created by the church. While the new rule allowed the practice, the numbers of married priests remained low as each case had to be put before and approved by the Pope himself.
Two years ago however things started to change when the current Pope opened the door for disgruntled Anglicans to convert to Catholicism. The move was designed to attract those who were unhappy with the new direction of Anglicanism but as a result mean't an increase in the number of married catholic priests. While it could be argued that the current laws only benefit those priests married before their conversion the ramifications of what's happening right now could be huge. With the inclusion of Episcopalians this year and the establishment of a new nationwide diocese in the United States headed by Jeffery N Steenson it will be interesting to see what happens next.
