The last weekend of July marked the end of the almost 3-week Noantri Festa in Trastevere. For those of you who aren’t familiar, this is one of the oldest and most beloved feasts in Rome. The ancient religious festival (which literally translates to “ours”) dates back to the 1500’s, where a group of local fishermen discovered a statue of the Madonna in the Tiber River after a huge storm. 

Nowadays, the festival is celebrated with various events for approximately 17 days. It begins with a procession where the famed statue is carried through Trastevere to the church of San Crisogono, where it is kept for 8 days before returning home by boat along the Tiber River on that last day.
